Healthy Beginnings at Home is a program that evaluates how help with housing impacts the health of moms, babies, and families who are in difficult housing situations. The purpose of the program is to show the state and nation the positive outcomes of housing moms and babies so that more funding goes towards making sure all moms and babies are housed and healthy.

Participant Qualifications

  • 18 or older

  • Enrolled in Medicaid

  • No more than 20 weeks pregnant

  • Any of the following:

    • Couch surfing
    • Living in shelter – homeless or domestic violence
    • Living in a car, motel, or on the street
    • Unable to afford your rent
    • Doubled-up in a single house or apartment
    • Are at risk of eviction

Evaluation Criteria

Information will be gathered from participants and evaluated in the following areas:
  • How housing affects the health of mom, baby, and the rest of your household members
  • The baby’s health, such as birth weight and if they were born early or on time
  • The community resources used by the families
  • The family’s income, employment, transportation, and access to food
  • The physical and mental health of mom and baby during and after pregnancy
