We developed the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT OH5) in 1991. We are proud that it is now part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), which is a under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The NDMS supplements the integrated national medical response capability by assisting state and local authorities with the medical impacts of major peacetime disasters. The NDMS also provides support to the U.S. military and the Department of Veterans Affairs by caring for casualties evacuated to the U.S. from overseas armed conventional conflicts.
Our DMAT OH5 continues to recruit and train medical response personnel who have deployed to national and man-made disasters such Hurricanes Fran, Katrina and Ike in addition to New York City and Pennsylvania after September 11, 2001.
In August of 2023, 28 members of our team were recognized for their service and sacrifice in response to the COVID Pandemic. These personnel were awarded the COVID-19 Pandemic Civilian Service Medal for actions nation’s pandemic response, as authorized by the U.S. Surgeon General.
